In 1981 Vasilios Gardiakos was diagnosed by his dentist to have advanced periodontitis, a form of gum disease. He was advised to have gum surgery. He had a strong feeling that cutting away the gum was not the correct thing to do. The Hippocratic concept "Physician, heal thy self" inspired him to look for an alternative. His desire to avoid the many costly office visits, the pain and the disfigurement that would make him look older, motivated him to conduct extensive research for a natural nonsurgical treatment for periodontitis.
